Thai DPM to attend AMM Retreat in Malaysia Jan 27-28

BANGKOK, January 26 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister General Tanasak Patimapragorn will attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat (AMM Retreat) in Malaysia, the current chair of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), from January 28-29. Invited by Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Haji Aman, General Tanasak is scheduled to lead a Thai delegation to fly from Bangkok to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, the venue of the two-day AMM Retreat, on Tuesday. According to a press release, issued by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday morning, General Tanasak plans to discuss and exchange views with other ASEAN foreign ministers on various issues, including the formation of the ASEAN Community (AC) by the end of this year and the development of ASEAN Post-2015 Vision. The official press release said the AMM Retreat, the first ASEAN meeting at the ministerial level set to be held this year, will also explore ways and means to enhance cooperation and capacities of all ASEAN member states to effectively address regional and global challenges, including terrorism, transnational crimes, natural disasters, and to promote sustainable development. Besides, the AMM Retreat will discuss centrality in the context of ASEAN's relations with external partners and the evolving regional architecture amidst changes in the regional landscape and beyond. The Thai delegation will also take the opportunity to follow up issues raised earlier by Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha at the 25th ASEAN Summit in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar's capital, last November, including the development of the Post-2015 Vision, ASEAN connectivity, cooperation on Thailand's establishment of special economic zones along border areas, people’s agenda for the establishment of the AC and measures to address non-traditional security threats in the region.
