Thai DPM, NSC chief visit Malaysia

BANGKOK, January 8 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Police Captain Chalerm Yoobumroong and his entourage, including Secretary-General of the National Security Council (NSC) Lieutenant-General Paradorn Pattanathabutr, are visiting Malaysia from January 8-10 to seek cooperation from the neighbouring country on solutions to quell violence in Thailand's insurgency-plagued southern border region. Lieutenant-General Paradorn told journalists in Bangkok on Tuesday, prior to the Thai delegation's departure for Malaysia, that during the ongoing three-day visit to Kuala Lumpur, the Thai team is scheduled to meet Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak to discuss solutions to the violent unrest in the Thai far South and in-depth intelligence sharing. According to the NSC chief, the Thai delegaton will also visit operators of Thai restaurants in Malaysia and to find out financial sources sponsoring insurgency in the troubled Thai deep South. The NSC chief assessed that the three-day trip to Malaysia by the Thai security authorities should not escalate the violent unrest in the southernmost Thai region and to raise it to a national-level issue, but it is expected to result in securing sound cooperation from Malaysia. The Thai NSC chief acknowledged that public forums on southern border issues will also be organized in the future, in which people of all groups, including those with different opinions, can openly participate to share their views, clear their doubts and build up confidence with each other.
