Thai DPM oversees TIP, IUU issues

BANGKOK, April 21 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, who oversees national security, has been authorised by Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha to be, from now on, responsible for the overall picture of the government's attempts to resolve human trafficking and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the country, as alleged by the United States and the European Union (EU). General Prawit, who is also Thai Defence Minister, will, thus, oversees several relevant panels so that solutions could be made soonest. General Prawit told journalists on Thursday that he has not yet been informed of any update from Thai Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Virachai Plasai. The deputy premier's remarks followed media reports that Virachai has warned Thailand could be red-carded if the EU viewed unsatisfactory progress of the Thai government's moves against IUU issues. The deputy prime minister acknowledged that the EU had earlier informed the Thai government for what it considered a slow progress in resolving the IUU issues in the country and the government had explained that the delays were stemmed from certain laws. Meanwhile, the prime minister has ordered the transfer of Director General of the Fisheries Department Wimol Jantrarotai to be a special inspector-general attached to the Prime Minister’s Office and appointed his deputy, Adisorn Promthep, to be the new department's chief, reasoning that the change is aimed at improving efficiency of the department.
