Thai DPM:Special administrative zone is not included in NSC-BRN peace talks

BANGKOK, March 27 (TNA) - Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung has confirmed that a proposal on the establishment of a special administrative zone in the violence-plagued Thai deep South is not included in peace talks agenda between the Thai government, through the National Security Council (NSC), and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) insurgent group, the first round of which is scheduled for March 28, 2013. Referring to Thursday's first-round peace talks between the NSC, led by NSC Secretary-General Lieutenant General Paradorn Pattanatabut himself, and the BRN group in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital, Police Captain Chalerm assured on Wednesday that the issue on the special administrative zone is impossible, insisting that those who attached banners and sprayed messages to demand the establishment of a "Pattani State" are senseless nuisances and did that only to waste money. Police Captain Chalerm acknowledged that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Royal Thai Armed Forces chiefs have already set scopes for the first-round negotiation between the NSC and the BRN group and after Thursday's talks, the Thai delegation is to report results to the government’s southern command center chaired by him. According to the deputy prime minister, the Thai negotiation delegation cannot make any decision on its own; so, critics have nothing to be worried. The deputy premier admitted that the NSC-BRN negotiation appears not to be so easy because problems in the Thai far South are not trivial but big, requiring careful work, but it is better than having no negotiation. In response to criticisms over continued violence in the Thai deep South after the recent signing of the peace talk pact between the NSC and the BRN insurgent group, the Thai deputy premier explained that the NSC secretary-general and a BRN representative had only set the appointment for the first-round March 28 talks, as the government intends to restore peace in the southernmost Thai region so that people can commute conveniently and make their livings safely without any insurgent threat.
