Thai EC launches online applications to facilitate voters

BANGKOK, January 21 (TNA) - The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) introduces new online applications usable for both the iOS and Android systems to facilitate voters. An election commissioner, Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, who is in charge of electoral administration, presided over a ceremony to first launch the "North Star" application for smartphones and tablets on Thursday, in which Thai voters can search for their names, as well as locations and the map of their election units. Somchai noted that Thailand's EC is the first in the world to have introduced such the application, after spending one year on developing it and 2-3 months on gathering relevant information funded by a budget of over 150,000 baht. Somchai said the new application will be used as a pilot project during the upcoming public referendum on Thailand's new Constitution draft. According to the election commissioner, the "North Star" application is available for download as of January 21 both for the iOS and Android operating systems, while information on eligible voters will be updated 20 days prior to the referendum. The election commissioner revealed that Thailand's EC is also developing other online applications to be later introduced, namely the "Pineapple Eyes" and the "Be Smart" applications, in which people can provide tip-offs on suspicious electoral irregularities and the content of the new Thai Charter draft respectively.
