Thai EC to seek compensation for nullified national poll

BANGKOK, December 22 (TNA) - The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) plans to seek compensation from parties being responsible for the country's invalidated general election on February 2, 2014. An election commissioner, Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, told journalists that the election agency is gathering evidence and relevant information before taking the action. Somchai, who oversees election administration, said the Constitutional Court then ruled to nullify the February 2 national poll has caused damage to the election agency about three billion baht. According to the election commissioner, the previous Pheu Thai Party-led coalition government of former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra pressed ahead with the February 2 general election despite the EC's warning that there were no candidates running in 28 constituencies in eight provinces in the Thai South. The election commissioner vowed those who are found involving in pushing for the national poll, which was later ruled to be unconstitutional, should be responsible for the compensation. (TNA)
