Thai, Foreign Workers Celebrate National Labour Day

BANGKOK, May 1 (TNA) - Thai and foreign workers on Thursday celebrate the National Labour Day nationwide. The celebrations are aimed at showing they are the important driving force of the country and boosting relations between Thai and foreign workers. About 200 Thai and Myanmar workers joined a marathon at the stadium of the Ranong provincial administrative organization. The provincial office of labour protection and welfare presented a prize to the marathon winner and provided participating workers with a feast. In the eastern Chanthaburi province bordering Cambodia, a vice president of an association of Thai-Cambodian border traders and travel agents said all labourers in the province are Cambodians due to the rise of minimum daily wages to 300 baht in Thailand. Cambodian workers return to Chanthaburi today after spending their Songkran holidays in their homeland last month. In the northeastern Bung Kan province, local authorities organized alms-giving activities and exhibitions to promote relations between employers and workers. In the southern Songkhla province, workers paraded to the provincial stadium and joined sports activities to boost labour relations. Most workers demanded welfare, safety and the minimum daily wage of 300 baht. The Songkhla governor encouraged workers to improve their skills to cope with the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community. In Krabi province, also in the South, workers paraded to the stadium of the Thara Thesaban public park in Muang Krabi district to participate in sports to boost relations between workers and employers. Most workers demanded welfare and safety at workplaces. (TNA)
