Thai government to assist landmine victims

BANGKOK, June 12 (TNA) - Representatives of the Norwegian People’s Aid on the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor met Thai Prime Minister Yincluck Shinawatra at Bangkok's Government House on Wednesday to ask her to speed up landmine clearance in Thailand to contain dangers and losses. Atle Karlsen, Deputy Director of the Norwegian People’s Aid on the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor, and local activists against weapons also brought activists, a female landmine disposal expert and landmine victims from Aranyaprathet district of Thailand's eastern Sa Kaeo province bordering Cambodia to attend the meeting. Government Spokesman Teerat Ratanasevi told a press conference that the activists urged for a quick landmine disposal in Thailand to protect people in landmine-prone areas. Teerat said the prime minister has informed the group that her government is well aware of the problem and pays special attention to their call, promising that she will order concerned agencies to do their best in landmine clearance and assistance for victims. During the meeting, Wibulrat Janchoo, a female representative of landmine survivors and leader of people with disabilities in Aranyaprathet, and Jaruwan Manthiang, a female landmine disposal expert of the Norwegian People’s Aid on the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor, expressed their appreciation to the Thai prime minister for her attention to the landmine issue and their hope that the Thai premier will publicise the dangers of landmines and will expand care for persons with disabilities (PWDs) who are landmine victims.
