Thai government eyes MCOT to become leading media in ASEAN

BANGKOK, December 28 (TNA) - The government has eyed MCOT Public Company Limited (MCOT), a most established Thai media firm, to represent Thailand as a media leader in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN. Minister Attached to the Prime Minister's Office Warathep Rattanakorn , who oversees MCOT, spoke of the Thai government's target, in the lead-up to the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015, when visiting MCOT's head office in Bangkok on Thursday, during which he was welcomed by the company's executives and employees. With the target, Warathep urged the personnel of MCOT, the operator of Modernine TV, Modern Radio Networks and the Thai News Agency or TNA, to always practice media ethics and neutrality when providing the public with news reports and information. Warathep also suggested MCOT to promote unity, in parallel with securing the company's survival amid more intensifying business competition in the region. The minister also called on MCOT to find a balance between doing business and taking social responsibility appropriately. According to the minister, MCOT is to comply with the new digital television ACT issued by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission or NBTC and to keep on promoting the company’s strength, in preparations for MCOT to also become a leading digital media in the region.
