Thai government includes garbage management as national agenda

BANGKOK, June 11 (TNA) - The Thai government has included the garbage management as a national agenda, covering measures to cut the amount of garbage nationwide from beginning sources. Government Spokesman Lieutenant General Sansern Kaewkamnerd told journalists of the policy on June 10, acknowledging that the Thai government has handled the total amount of garbage of almost 60 million tons annually over the past four years. The spokesman stated that the government's garbage management includes issuing and enforcing laws, as well as implementing measures to reduce garbage from beginning sources, to promote renewable use of resources and to create disciplines among people in the country. Besides, the Thai government has worked together with the private sector to promote the environmentally- friendly goods packaging system, under which the recycling policy and the gradual reduction of cap-seal use are strongly encouraged. For the problem of marine garbage, the spokesman said that all marine national parks, under the supervision of the Thai Ministry of National Resources and Environment, have been instructed to become plastic bags-free zones, starting, as a pilot project, with those in 15 coastal provinces, while 24 other beachside areas nationwide have also been ordered to become garbage and cigarette-free zones. The spokesman revealed that seaside shops, markets and buildings have also been asked to reduce their plastic use to minimize the amount of garbage in their areas, noting the Thai government's concrete move on the garbage management has been appreciated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Meanwhile, the spokesman quoted Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha as praising the state-run Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), as well as other public and private agencies for paying attention to the environmental protection by launching campaigns and organizing activities to create public awareness on the use of renewable products and the reduction and the elimination of garbage, citing the "Trad Dream Islands Run 2018" in Trat Province in the Thai East and a garbage collection along the Patong Beach in Phuket Province in the Thai South by a group of some 60 African business operators as good initiatives.
