Thai government increases budgets for southern development

BANGKOK, June 6 (TNA) - The government is increasing its budget to fund development projects in the violence-plagued Thai far South. Lieutenant General Paradorn Pattanatabutr, Secretary-General of the National Security Council (NSC), told journalists on Thursday, after a meeting of security authorities concerned in Bangkok chaired by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, that the prime minister has already ordered the Bureau of the Budget to increase state budgets funding development projects in the Thai deep South. Lieutenant General Paradorn said that the prime minister has also demanded public safety on transport routes in the southernmost Thai region and has instructed security authorities to adjust their measures, as insurgents are targeting high-ranking government officials and urban areas. Regarding Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak’s recent proposal on turning Thailand's troubled three southern border provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani to become a special administrative zone to end violent incidents and to restore peace in the Thai far South, the NSC chief noted that local educational institutes are gathering opinions from local people.
