Thai government prepares more safety measures for cyclists

BANGKOK, May 10 (TNA) - In the wake of a series of traffic accidents which have injured and killed cyclists recently, the Thai government has directed all concerned agencies to campaign for road safety, while the Transport Ministry will increase measures to offer protection and conveniences to cyclists. Government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp said on Sunday that the government wanted such measures, especially checkpoints to stop drink-drivers and strictly enforce relevant laws. To promote cycling, the spokesman said, the Transport Ministry would build special bicycle lanes with warning signs and such lanes would be painted clearly differently or lined with lane dividers. Agencies supervising roads where there were bicycle lanes would be told to make their roads more convenient and safe for cyclists. Dr Yongyuth also said police would gather problems and opinions from cyclists nationwide, determine safe routes and cycling hours, and assign officers to facilitate bike traffic and offer relevant advice on their safety. Meanwhile, he said, cyclists were advised to use bicycles with good conditions and enough components, especially reflective materials and lamps for night or dark rides. (TNA)
