Thai government to speed up agricultural zoning

BANGKOK, June 29 (TNA) - In an attempt to improve the livelihood of farmers and control on locally-grown crops, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has reiterated that her government will accelerate the agricultural zoning programme nationwide. Yingluck told the public during her weekly TV and radio programme on Saturday morning (June 29) that the agricultural zoning programme will further develop the Thai agricultural sector, as it designates which areas are suitable for growing cash crops and allow local farmers to have an easy access to transportation and to find raw materials. Yingluck explained that the programme will assist local farmers to lower their production costs, boost output, reduce oversupply and solve a decline in crop prices, which will further raise their livelihood. Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Yukol Limlaemthong, meanwhile, acknowledged that the agricultural zoning programme has already started since earlier this year and its outcome should be clearly seen within five years. Arkom Tempitayapaisit, Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), noted that the agricultural zoning programme will be closely connected to other government-sponsored water management programmes and a revamp of nationwide transportation plans.
