Thai government urged not to take legal action against students

BANGKOK, June 30 (TNA) - The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR) has issued a statement, calling for the Thai government to release and not to take criminal action against students who have been arrested after holding a peaceful demonstration against the junta. UNOHCHR urged in the statement, issued on Tuesday, that the Thai government release the students immediately and review the law enforcement on limiting public rights on freedom of expression and assembly, as Thailand is a member of the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights. UNOHCHR said in the statement although the Thai government has promised that it is restoring justice, a limit to people's fundamental rights in the country appears to have continued. Meanwhile, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister General Tanasak Patimapragon told journalists that Thailand enjoys democracy more than the past, as the country is now safer and more peaceful, insisting, if no prejudice, the international community should understand the situation in Thailand properly and know what the interim government is doing for the public and the nation.
