Thai government urged to work out sustainable garbage solutions

BANGKOK, February 5 (TNA) - The Environmental Management Industry Club, under the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), has urged the government to handle 57 million tons of garbage in the country in sustainable manners. Theeraphol Tirawasin, head of the club, told journalists on Friday that his club has proposed to Thai the government, as part of the call, to implement standards for garbage management, introduce suitable garbage disposal technologies for different areas and cooperate well with private business operators who invest in garbage disposal. Theeraphol stressed there are now 57 million tons of community waste in Thailand, including 30 million tons of accumulated garbage, and most of it has been left in 2,024 open dump sites which have created high pollution. Theeraphol noted that problems from community wastes have been growing because of consumers' failure to sort garbage, as well as substandard garbage collection and disposal. Theeraphol also proposed that the Thai government launch public campaigns on reducing, reusing and recycling products, as well as incinerate garbage and bury ash. (TNA)
