Thai government works out agricultural zoning

BANGKOK, December 19 (TNA) - The government is moving forward a policy on agricultural zoning to boost the productivity of the Thai agricultural sector. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra insisted on Wednesday, when chairing a government workshop in Bangkok on the policy to organise the agricultural zoning in the country, that her government is not limiting Thai agriculturists’ rights on their farmlands, but, instead, seeking ways to help increase their productivity. Yingluck told officials attending the workshop, including her advisor and former deputy prime minister Virabongsa Ramangkura, as well as ministers and senior officials concerned, that the escalating problem of climate change or global warming has dwindled agricultural output in the country; so, her government is determined to boost local agriculturists’ output and help them in conducting research for planting crops in appropriate areas and for seeds development and even in preparing agricultural zoning. Simultaneously, Yingluck acknowledged, her administration will take action based on His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Sufficiency Economy Principle, saying that joint cooperation by parties concerned, including a land survey and water management, is necessary so that the agricultural zoning does not pose any obstacle to local farmers. According to the Thai prime minister, the Thai government plans to conduct zoning on the local fishing industry later. (TNA)
