Thai health authority:There has been no epidemic in Nepal

BANGKOK, May 2 (TNA) - Quake-hit Nepal has been safe from any epidemic so far although there have been reports of diarrhea cases in some areas where there are water shortages. Thai Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr. Suriya Wongkongkathep told journalists of the update on Saturday, stressing, however, that international health teams have remained on alert to prevent any outbreak of communicable diseases in the areas at risk in Nepal. Dr. Suriya, who just returned from a relief mission in Nepal, said that most quake-affected patients In Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, have been well-treated at local hospitals, but medical services have not yet reached all outlying areas, through which only helicopters and four-wheel-drive vehicles can access. The senior Thai health official assessed that it should take about 3-6 months before medical services at hospitals in Nepal’s remote areas could return to normal and, in the meantime, filed hospitals are needed. According to the senior Thai health official, relief assistance appears to be sufficient now in Nepal as there have already been 83 international relief teams in quake-affected areas. (TNA)
