Thai health ministry recommends protein in insects

BANGKOK, May 15 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Public Health has encouraged people to eat insects as they are sources of high chemical-free protein and fiber but low fat, as earlier reported by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Dr. Narong Saiwongse, Deputy Director-General of the ministry's Department of Health, acknowledged on Wednesday that Thai people have, actually, long had local sources of protein, including red ant eggs. Dr. Narong described that Thai northeasterners have particularly had red ant eggs in soup, salad and other kinds of food to add some greasy taste, recommending that red ant eggs be also added in pizza. Dr. Narong confirmed that red ant eggs contain more protein than chicken eggs in an equal amount and red ant eggs are free of chemical although they may be contaminated with dust in a limited degree. The senior Thai health official advised, however, that red ant eggs be well-cooked for consumers' safety, and that snail eggs, which also contain protein, should also be well-cooked to kill parasites before consumption.
