Thai Labour group make 11-point demand with government

BANGKOK, May 1 (TNA) – Labour groups in Thailand set an 11-point demand for the government, focusing on improvement of labour skills, on the occasion of Labour Day 2013. Chinnachote Saengsang, chairman of a committee organizing the Labour Day activity, said the demand include ratification of the Conventions Number 87 and 98 of the International Labour Organisation. This also includes arranging compensation funds for workers laid off without severance pay and the upgrade of the Social Security Office to an independent organization. Labour Minister Padermchai Sasomsap told reporters at an interview given afterwards that some of the 11-point demand had been partly met but the rest would depend on cooperation from other ministries. He assured the government was keen to enhance workforce training, saying Prime Minister Yingluck also recently called for more steps to be taken to prepare Thailand’s workforce for the ASEAN Economic Community.
