Thai, Lao Cabinets to discuss transport networking

BANGKOK, May 15 (TNA) - Thai and Lao ministers will discuss transport connection between the two neighbouring countries, including two new friendship bridges across the Mekong River, during their 2nd Joint Cabinet Retreat (JCR) in Chiang Mai province in the Thai North this coming weekend. Thailand will host the 2nd Thai-Lao JCR at the Le Meridien Hotel from May 18-19, the first joint Cabinet meeting between the two neighbours in eight years. At the forthcoming two-day Thai-Lao JCR, the Thai side will follow up the construction of the 4th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge linking Chiang Kong district in Thailand's northern Chiang Rai province with Laos' Huay Xai Town, which may be officially opened in mid-2013. The Thai Cabinet will also raise a plan to construct the 5th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge linking Thailand’s northeastern Bueng Kan province with Laos' Paksan Town for a discussion. Besides, the Thai Cabinet will confirm Thailand's support for infrastructure development in Laos and infrastructure networks between both neighbours. The Lao Cabinet is likely, on the other hand, to urge Thailand to speed up a new high-speed train project linking Bangkok with Nong Khai province in the Thai Northeast, which will then be connected to a high-speed rail route from Laos and southern China for regional benefits. For investment cooperation, Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has, meanwhile, ordered the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI) to bring Thai business operators to Laos for business matching, which also meets the Lao government's policy on persuading Thai investors to do their businesses in the neighbouring country.
