Thai, Lao military leaders confirm close ties

BANGKOK, August 14 (TNA) - Thai and Lao military leaders have stressed on strengthened relations between Bangkok and Vientiane, as a top brass Lao military leader is paying an official visit to Thailand, scheduled for August 13-14, as the guest of the Royal Thai Armed Forces. The visiting Lao military leader, Major General Suvon Luongbunmi, Chief of the General Staff of the Lao People's Army (LPA), met Thai Supreme Commander General Tanasak Patimapragorn, who is also a deputy chief of the Thai army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), at the Royal Thai Armed Forces headquarters in Bangkok on Wednesday, after his arrival in Thailand earlier in the day, during which Major General Suvon insisted on the positive and long-standing bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries. Major General Suvon cited Thai and Lao armed forces' close ties in training, education, visits, border affairs, noting that Laos and Thailand have also made good progress in border demarcation. Major General Suvon also said that the LPA understands the NCPO and hoped the latter would achieve the goals of its roadmap for Thailand. Besides, the visiting senior Lao military officer thanked the Royal Thai Armed Forces for expressing their condolences for the death of Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Douangchay Phichit in an air crash in Pakse on May 17, 2014 and for the Thai military's contribution to the search and rescue mission following the accident.
