Thai medical aid arrives for remote village in quake-hit Nepal

BANGKOK, May 3 (TNA) - A Thai Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) has provided medical care to a remote village in Nepal, which was hit by a massive earthquake on April 25. Colonel Sirichan Nga-thong, Deputy Army Spokesperson, said on Sunday the Thai army’s command center on Saturday deployed the MERT team to provide medical aid to villagers in Sindhukot, which lies around 50 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu. The deployment followed a request by the Nepalese Multi National Military Coordination Center, she said. The Thai MERT team was the first aid group to have arrived at the remote village and the trip to the area took more than five hours, according to the deputy army spokesperson. Colonel Sirichan said the Thai MERT team provided emergency medical care to some 200 villagers, many whom had wounds resulted from the devastating earthquake. They also contacted the Nepalese authorities in sending those with serious injuries for treatment in hospital in the Nepalese capital, said. Assuming that no aid team would arrive in the village in the coming days, the Thai MERT team then gave the villagers all their medical supplies before they left the area, she said. Meanwhile, the deputy army spokesperson said an army’s drinking-water-production unit over the past three days has produced 34,000 liters of water for hospitals, military camps and people in Kathmandu.
