Thai MFA views Amnesty Int'l report imbalance

BANGKOK, February 26 (TNA) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that a recent report published by Amnesty International (AI) on the human rights situation in Thailand shows imbalance and insufficient study on the contexts of the Thai Kingdom. Responding to the Al annual report on “The State of the World’s Human Rights”, released on February 24, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sek Wannamethee told journalists on February 25 that the AI report appears to fail to consider challenges in Thailand and the necessity to balance between the freedom of expression and gatherings and the prevention of political conflicts. Besides, the spokesman pointed out, AI appears not to look into achievements of the Thai government in solving human-trafficking problems, organizing an international meeting on irregular migration in the Indian Ocean and improving 164 laws to respond to international obligations. “Regarding people’s freedom, I insist that Thailand attaches importance to the freedom of expression and internationally- recognized human rights. It is seen that media organizations have freedom to criticize the government. However, it is necessary to maintain order and prevent social disunity because Thailand is undergoing reform to create national unity and secure and sustainable democracy,” said the spokesman. The AI report indicates that human rights of people, including refugees, were limited in Thailand and the Thai junta delayed the transition of power and limited the freedom of gatherings. (TNA)
