PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, March 22 (TNA) - Thai and Myanmar officials on Sunday held talks in the Thai border province of Prachuap Khiri Khan on how to further develop trade, investment and tourism along the Singkhon – Myeik temporary border checkpoint which was opened almost two years ago. Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Weera Sriwattanatrakul led Thai officials and the private sector in talks with U Mia Koh, head of Myanmar’s Tanao Sri, held at a hotel in the province . The temporary border checkpoint in which the opening time is now extended from 6.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. to allow Myanmar people visiting the Red Cross fair, started from Friday until March 29. Both sides discussed the possibility of making the temporary border checkpoint into a permanent one while the issue is under the consideration of the Foreign Affairs Ministry . Mr. U Mia Koh said his government is interested in turning Singkhon – Myeik into a permanent border checkpoint in order to improve the livelihood of villagers living along the border. He said Myanmar leaders had officially informed the Thai prime minister of their wish. Myeik province has a great potential in fishery as it is located on the coastline of the Andaman Sea while several investors are interested to construct hotels to cater to the opening of the border checkpoint in future, said Mr. U Mia Koh.
