Thai officials suppress illegal logging

MAE HON SON, April 20 (TNA) - A total of 100 officials started a new operation Sunday to suppress illegal logging and to prevent forest fire in Mae Hong Son province bordering Myanmar. Boonkua Kunatharnkul, district officer of Mae Hong Son’s Sop Moei district witnessed their operation on Sunday. These 100 officials will be responsible for suppressing forest encroachment and fighting forest fire in three districts in the province along the mighty Salween River which marks the border between the two countries. Lek Wongsa, director of forestry conservation area in Mae Hong Son, said provincial officials have been able to suppress 11 cases of forest encroachment and seize about 1,200 processed teak planks and 130 teak logs since the beginning of this month.
