Thai people urged to eat more eggs

BANGKOK, April 2 (TNA) - Thailand’s Egg Board has planned a campaign on promoting more egg consumption among people, to 284 eggs per person per year by 2018, from 220 per person per year currently. Caretaker Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Yukol Limlaemthong told journalists that the Egg Board's campaign to encourage people to consume more eggs is aimed to fix the oversupply of chicken eggs. Yukol said that the campaign is also aimed to publicize information on rich nutritions of eggs. People in Thailand consume about 36 million eggs presently, but it is expected that there will be an oversupply of 38 million eggs daily, as about 149,000 egg chickens imported in 2013 will produce eggs in mid 2014, while additional 830,000 chickens are expected to be imported this year. Chairman of small-scale hen egg farmers society Chaiporn Seesan acknowledged that local farmers have been seriously affected by a plung of egg prices on the domestic market, as the price of farm-front eggs has dropped to 2.60 baht each currently, from its normal price of 3.10 baht each. The society has, therefore, requested the Egg Board to review Thailand's egg import plan this year, as part of a solution to the oversupply problem. (TNA)
