Thai PM backs ASEAN cooperation on ICT

BANGKOK, January 22 (TNA) - Regional delegations are gathering in Bangkok for the 14th ASEAN Telecommunications and IT Ministers Meeting (TELMIN), scheduled for January 19-23, during which Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha meets information and communication technology (ICT) ministers of ASEAN member countries and dialogue partners and calls on regional cooperation on telecommunications and information technology (IT) for mutual benefits. Addressing the 14th TELMIN, themed “Transforming ASEAN: Moving Towards Smart Communities” and held at the Shangri-La Hotel in the capital, Thai Prime Minister General Prayut said on Thursday morning that the ICT connectivity, especially broadband Internet, is essential for the formation of the ASEAN Community (AC) by the end of this year. The Thai prime minister, however, warned against the abuse of ICT to create conflicts, urging all ASEAN member countries and the participating dialogue partners, including China, Japan, South Korea and India, to join forces in developing security in all dimensions and to create communication channels for swift information exchange, especially when it comes to disaster responses. The Thai prime minister also expressed his hope that ASEAN's 2nd ICT master plan in the following year should comprehensively support the AC and the implementation of ICT development strategies over the next five years.
