Thai PM calls for ASEAN-UN post-2015 integrated action plan

NAY PYI TAW, NYANMAR, November 13 (TNA) - Thailand has proposed that the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) integrate their post 2015 action plans for genuine benefits of ASEAN population. General Prayut made the call on Wednesday at the 6th ASEAN-UN Summit, held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar's capital, on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and other related forums from November 12-13, in which leaders of all 10 ASEAN member countries, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh participated. General Prayut, who is also head of the Thai army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), proposed that ASEAN and UN chiefs assign concerned agencies to integrate the post 2015-UN development Action Plan and the ASEAN Community’s Post-2015 Vision. The Thai prime minister said Thailand is pleased that UN is ready for greater cooperation with ASEAN, especially in the fields of agriculture and food security to bring about sustainable agricultural development and greater food security within the region and the world. The Thai premier stated that Thailand also appreciates to the UN's roles in promoting the establishment of early warning systems against natural disasters in member countries, which are vital for countries in Southeast Asia that face all types of natural disasters The Thai leader also praised the UN's roles in promoting ASEAN connectivity through the integration of transport and logistics systems between member countries under the ASEAN Strategic Transport Plan for 2011-2015, which is crucial to the agricultural development and increased income of farmers in the region. The Thai prime minister also called for UN to help address problems which may occur from greater regional connectivity, such as transnational crimes and drug and human trafficking, vowing Thailand's continual support for ASEAN-UN cooperation on assisting human trafficking victims. The 10-member ASEAN is scheduled to establish the ASEAN Community, a single community, by the end of 2015, with combined population of some 600 million and gross domestic product (GDP) of about 2 trillion US dollars.
