Thai PM inaugurates high-level G-77 meeting

BANGKOK, March 9 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha has opened the High-Level Panel of Eminent Personalities of the South on South-South Cooperation of Group of 77 (G77) developing countries at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok on Wednesday. The two-day meeting, scheduled for March 9-10, focuses on the participation and integration of the G77 nations into the global economy. On the occasion, the Thai prime minister said that international cooperation must be based on the needs of all participating countries for the sake of their sustainability and Thailand has attached importance to the Perez-Guerrero Trust Fund, set up by the United Nations. The prime minister announced that Thailand has donated 520,000 US dollars to the fund to celebrate the 52nd anniversary of G77, encouraging G-77 member states to follow suit to support cooperation among developing countries. Participants in the meeting include heads and former heads of international organizations, former ministers, ambassadors and permanent representatives from New York and chairs of G-77 from all chapters, who are gathering for brainstorming on the architecture of South-South cooperation, particularly within the context of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Main agenda include shaping the South-South Strategies for the Implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the Role of G77 in Strengthening the Multilateral Architecture Cooperation and South-South Cooperation and Ways and Means for Financing and Operationalizing South-South Cooperation. On March 10, the participants will visit the Khao Hin Son Royal Development Study Center in Chachoengsao Province in the Thai East to experience the application of the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, initiated by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, for sustainable development. On March 11, Thailand will also host the 47th Annual Meeting of Chairmen/Coordinators of the G-77 Chapters, aimed to strengthen coordination among G-77 Chapters (New York, Vienna, Geneva, Rome, Paris, Nairobi and Washington DC), in which Thai ambassadors in countries where G-77 chapters are located will participate.
