Thai PM opens national leaders' session of Asia-Pacific Water Summit

CHIANG MAI, May 20 (TNA) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra opened on Monday morning the national leaders' session as part of the 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Summit, being held in Chiang Mai Province in the Thai North from May 14-20. The prime minister then delivered a speech on disasters, disaster relief operations, water management and flood prevention plans in Thailand. The 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Summit has been heavily guarded with maximum security measures, including layers of checkpoints and aerial surveillance by helicopters. Riot police have also been deployed and an auditorium near the summit venue has been prepared for receiving complaints from demonstrators, if any. Prior to the national leaders' session, the prime minister hosted a breakfast for the national leaders of nine participating countries and brought them to see an exhibition on water-related development projects initiated by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej which have improved quality of life of the Thai people, including those on rainmaking to cope with drought, growing of vetiver grass to prevent erosion, as well as those on reservoirs, dams, agricultural initiatives and water retention areas. The Thai prime minister, along with Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi, also led the participating national leaders to see exhibitions on severe flooding in Thailand in late 2011, water management technologies and projects, community-based water management systems, disaster warning systems and local products.
