Thai PM orders military to help flood victims

BANGKOK, September 22 (TNA) - Prime Minister and Defence Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has ordered military officials to coordinate with authorities in 15 provinces nationwide to assist people who are affected by severe flooding. Defence Ministry Spokesman Colonel Thanathip Sawangsaeng said on Sunday that Yingluck had expressed her concerns over flood victims in the kingdom and had ordered the military to dispatch about 1,500 officials along with 35 trucks and 29 flat-bottomed boats to assist the flood victims. He said the officials would help in repairing damaged bridges and set up temporary shelters for the flood victims. The spokesperson said the Royal Thai Navy has assigned two ships and two helicopters which could operate round-the-clock to help provide assistance to the victims while the Royal Thai Air Force would send three helicopters to survey water levels at dams and flood-prone risk areas.
