Thai PM proposes single economy at 10th ASEM

MILAN, ITALY, October 17 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha has called for increasing cooperation between Europe and Asia, creating a single economy between the two continents and mobilising more funds of European firms to participate in infrastructure investment projects in the Asian region. The Thai premier aired the three proposed strategies on Thursday while delivering a keynote speech at the opening of the 10th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), held in Milan, Italy, from October 15-18, in which leaders of 51 European and Asian countries and two international organisations participate. General Prayut said Thailand hosted the First ASEM and has constantly joined in developing partnership between the two regions so far and, because of the more global complexity now, there is a need for reviewing strategies designed for promoting financial and economic cooperation between the two regions. The Thai premier pointed out that there is also a need for political leadership in widening Asia-Europe connectivity and in utilising their knowledge, expertise, resources and investment, as stated in his proposed strategies. According to the prime minister, Thailand has also planned to further develop national infrastructure in order to connect with neighbouring countries. The Thai leader explained that the projects are aimed at developing the country's goods transportation, as well as service and labour links with neighbouring countries in order to open new markets to serve the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by the end of 2015 and to prepare for future cooperation between Asia and Europe. Besides, the Thai leader urged every party to realise and to be prepared for a possible shortage of food and energy in the future, caused by impacts of climate change and rising global demand. (TNA)
