Thai PM visits flood victims

SUKHOTHAI, THAILAND, September 12 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha has traveled to Sukhothai Province to visit flood victims in the lower northern Thai province, pledging that his new administration will try to solve the current flooding problem as soon as possible. Accompanied by Commerce Minister General Chatchai Sirikalya and Deputy Defence Minister General Udomdej Sitabutr, General Prayuth flew to Sukhothai by a helicopter on Friday afternoon, following the presentation of his government’s policies to the National Legislative Assembly (NLA). The prime minister and his entourage later landed in Sukhothai’s Kong Krailat District and visited flood victims. Before his departure, the prime minister told journalists that 7-8 districts in Sukhothai have remained under floodwater, promising that his government will try to solve flooding during the ongoing monsoon season and drought during the upcoming dry season. However, the prime minister admitted that it appears to be difficult to solve the flooding problem in areas along the Yom River, as the “U shape” of the river in the Lower Thai North obstructs water drainage. The prime minister said he will order the water management committee and concerned officials to inspect the Yom River and find solutions. According to the prime minister, 32 Thai provinces, mostly in the North and the Northeast, were earlier flooded, but the normal situation has returned to several of them and the government is trying to solve the crux and to provide assistance to flood victims as soon as possible.
