Thai PM visits Turkey

BANGKOK, July 5 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister and Defence Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is visiting Turkey, aimed to enhance trade, investment and partnership with the European country, after ending her trip to Poland, another allied nation in Europe. After concluding her official visit to Poland, starting from July 3, Yingluck and her entourage left the military airport in Warsaw, Poland's capital, for Istanbul, Turkey's capital, and she is scheduled to arrive in the Turkish capital at 12:20pm on Friday (local time). The Thai Prime Minister is scheduled to then visit the Marmaray rail tunnel linking Europe and Asia, before having a discussion with her Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday afternoon (local time). Both leaders were set to later preside over the signing of three bilateral agreements between Thailand and Turkey, including a convention on extradition and the execution of criminal rulings, a Thai-Turkish action plan and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on technical cooperation and bilateral diplomatic training. It is the first visit to Turkey in eight years by a Thai prime minister, aimed at developing cooperation in the areas at which Turkey is good, including the construction, halal, renewable energy and education sectors, as well as to boost partnership in the frameworks of international organizations, namely the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). During their stay in Turkey, the Thai Prime Minister and her entourage will also study Turkey as an emerging market for trade, investment and tourism, as Turkey is paying more attention to Asia and ASEAN amid economic problems in Europe.
