Thai PM:Democracy could succeed if people fully understand

BANGKOK, May 4 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra says that genuine democracy in the country can be achieved if people understand the meaning and fully exercise it. Speaking during her weekly TV and radio broadcast on Saturday, Yingluck suggested what are considered significant fundamentals are the development of democracy needs to be carried out in line with legal procedures and people understand and fully exercise their rights. Yingluck cautioned if the democratic system was implemented in any wrong way, it could create problems. The prime minister's remarks were in response to criticisms of several opponents of her government for her speech on democracy given while she attended the 7th Ministerial Conference of the Community of Democracies in Mongolia late last month. Reiterating that the international conference was vital, as it wanted member countries to perfectly achieve the democratic system, the prime minister acknowledged although Thailand has now obtained the democratic system following the latest general election in 2011, the Kingdom has to make sure that every step undertaken is done in accordance with the laws and also creates a balance to ensure that every citizen enjoys equal rights. According to the Thai premier, it is the responsibility of everyone to help strengthen democracy, make people happy and ensure a fresh suffering will never happen in Thailand. (TNA)
