Thai PM:Martial law is maintained

BANGKOK, October 6 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha, who is also Chief of the army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), insists that the imposition of the martial law will be continued. General Prayuth told journalists on Monday that the martial law, which was first imposed in May 2014, needs to be maintained because political groups have, again, started their movements. General Prayuth acknowledged that his government has monitored their movements, cautioning that they must abide by law. But the prime minister affirmed that he will use power constructively. Meanwhile, authorities of the Tha Phra Chan Campus of Thammasat University organized an event to mark the 38th anniversary of the October 6, 1976 uprising, during which participants, gave alms to Buddhist monks, laid wreaths and praised those killed in the incident. The management of the university, together with relatives of the killed demonstrators, including students and activists, held the event to remember the part of the Thai political history that involved Thammasat University and introduce demonstrators’ heroic spirits to people of the younger generations. There was also a small exhibition on the incident at Thammasat University's Rangsit Campus. In October 1976, students and people demonstrated inside Thammasat University's Tha Phra Chan Campus. They were then cracked down by government security officers in the early morning of Oct 6, 1976, with the official death toll reported at 46. (TNA)
