Thai police certain arrested suspect connected with Sathorn pier bombing

BANGKOK, August 30 (TNA) - Thai police say they are certain a foreigner detained on Saturday at an apartment block on Bangkok outskirts is connected with the capital’s second bombing incident at Sathorn pier earlier this month. Royal Thai Police Spokesman Police Lieutenant General Pravut Thawornsiri said on Sunday investigators found several pieces of evidence including the suspect’s clothes and personal effects and explosives inside his apartment room that was used at the Sathorn pier incident. All of the passports found inside the apartment room were also fake. The incident occurred on August 18, one day after the massive bombing in central Bangkok which killed 20 persons, mostly foreigners, and wounded some 120 others. On that day, the bomb was believed to be thrown from Sathorn Bridge into parking lot near Sathorn pier but it bounced into water and exploded but no casualties were reported. Police Lieutenant General Pravut said police had traced cell phone signals near the pier on the bombing day back to the arrested suspect, and were running checks on the people whom he had called a few days before the attack in order to track other suspects involved. Speaking on the deadly explosion at Ratchaprasong intersection, Police Lieutenant General Pravut said police were still verifying the nationality of the suspects but also said police believed several Thais in the gang were involved.
