Thai police to extradite wanted foreigners

BANGKOK, January 7 (TNA) - The Royal Thai Police has a policy to extradite foreign culprits or criminals who are wanted and requested by allied countries, based on extradition pacts. National Police Chief Police General Somyot Poompanmoung told journalists of the policy on Wednesday, acknowledging, however, that he has ordered his subordinates nationwide to keep secret information on the arrests of foreign culprits or criminals because their cases may be sensitive. The national police chief expressed the stance in response to recent reports on a wanted Pakistani man, identified as Gurmeet Singh, who was arrested by Thai police in eastern resort Chon Buri Province in the Thai East on January 5, after he had reportedly planted a bomb, broken his jail and fled to Thailand. The national police chief explained that the arrests of foreigners are sensitive and may have impacts on international relations and he has, therefore, instructed his nationwide subordinates not to provide any information on the arrests of foreigners to reporters, but conducting extradition with countries which wanted them right away. According to the national police chief, more than 10 globally wanted criminal suspects have been arrested in Thailand since he took office, but he has not made headlines of the cases. (TNA)
