Thai police nab more Russian suspect in fake ATM scam

BANGKOK, November 22 (TNA) - Thai police have arrested one more Russian suspected for involving in a fake ATM scam. The Economic Crime division police announced their arrest of the new Russian suspect, identified as Andrey Veretelnikov, on Thursday, saying they also seized the suspect's computer and 40 blank electronic cards although no skimmer has been found. According to the Thai police, the new arrested Russian is in the same gang with three earlier apprehended suspects, two Russian and a Thai nationals, including Sherkie Pierturner and Alersy Stiedter, as well as Police Sergeant Major Nontapan Saengsuk, a Thai tourist police officer. All were alleged to have used fake electronic cards to withdraw cash from many automatic teller machines (ATMs) in Nakhon Ratchasima Province in the Thai Northeast. The Thai police said that they have also seized 2,945,000 baht and 327 fake ATM and credit cards using accounts in over 50 countries from the three earlier arrested suspects, who confessed that Veretelnikov was their accomplice. An initial probe found that Veretelnikov had acquired data from victims's electronic cards and sent them to other accomplices, some of whom remain at large. Veretelnikov was then charged with theft, the use of fake electronic cards and money laundering. The Thai police revealed that they are hunting for a gang of Taiwanese people who are also alleged to have used fake electronic cards to withdraw cash in Sadao District of Songkhla Province in the Thai South.
