Thai police seize illegal woods in Northeast

NAKHON PANOM, May 3 (TNA) - Police in Nakhon Phanom Province in the Thai Northeast, bordering Lao PDR, have intercepted a pick-up truck, suspected of trying to smuggle Burmese Rosewoods across the border. The police from Na Kae Police Station stopped the pick-up truck on Saturday (MAy 3) while it was heading from Na Kae to That Phanom District, but the driver managed to escape. The local police found inside the pick-up truck 25 logs of Burmese Rosewood, all with two metres long and 30 centimetres wide, and seized all of the woods. The Na Kae police told reporters that they believe the seized logs were illegally cut down from a national park in Na Kae and were about to be sent across the Mekong River by boats to be sold in neighbouring countries. The police investigators vowed to carry out the case in order to make further arrests and to put an end to the province's illegal wood smuggling ring. (TNA)
