Thai private hospitals urged to uphold fair rates

BANGKOK, May 14 (TNA) - Airing his government's policy on attracting more overseas patients and continually promoting Thailand as a regional medical hub, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha has called on private hospitals to provide health and medical services with reasonable rates to comply with his administration's national reform in all areas, covering healthcare. Prime Minister General Prayut made the call this week, after a public complaint had been lodged with his government, seeking authorities' control on unfair private hospitals' rates. The prime minister said that the Thai Ministry of Public Health will handle the issue, urging private hospitals to, however, maintain ethical rates, covering those charged to overseas patients, whose healthcare spending has contributed to over 100,000 million baht for the Thai economy. The Thai prime minister suggested that medical rates charged by the country's private hospitals should not be 7-10 times higher than those of public hospitals. The Thai premier insisted that his government has no policy to take legal action against private hospitals with high medical bills, but recommending ethical choices for medical treatment options for patients.
