Thai protesters celebrate new main rally site

BANGKOK, March 3 (TNA) - Protesters of the anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) performed Buddhist religious rites and offered alms to monks on Monday morning to celebrate their new main rally site at Lumpini public park in central Bangkok. Led by PDRC secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban, core leaders and protesters of the movement moved from four other sites in Bangkok to the new rally site on Sunday. The PDRC leaders said they believed the Lumpini public park could provide a better security and could also strengthen their goal in toppling the Yingluck caretaker government, allegedly charged with corruption. Another group of PDRC protesters, in the meantime, marched to the Ministry of Finance's Customs Department to inspect whether officials were still working, if so, they would be asked to return home. Meanwhile, Ravee Rungreung, Chairman of Thai Farmers Network, led farmers who are demanding payment from the caretaker government for their rice sold to the Ministry of Commerce's rice-pledging programme, to rally at the Office of the Auditor General in the capital to inquire whether any progress has been made concerning the late payment. The protesting farmers were joined by another group of anti-government protesters, led by a senior Buddhist monk, Luang Pu Buddha Issara, aimed to file a lawsuit against Caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her concerned Cabinet's members involving in the rice-pledging scheme.(TNA)
