Thai research on rubber latex helps fight against cancer

BANGKOK, October 18 (TNA) - As local rubber growers are facing declining prices of rubber latex and have asked the Thai interim government to provide financial subsidy, a professor at Prince of Songkla University is conducting a research on using the latex in fighting against the deadly cancer. Professor Dr. Rapeepun Wititsuwannakul of the University’s Faculty of Science, told journalists that she has conducted a study on rubber for more than two decades and has found that rubber latex contains several advantages to human, such as slowing aging, boosting human health and even preventing cancer. Tests have been conducted on animals with a satisfactory outcome, she said, adding that tests are being conducted on volunteers. Professor Dr. Rapeepun has asked for the government’s assistance on marketing, as the project would assist rubber growers in long-term if cosmetic products, made from latex from her research, could penetrate overseas market. Meanwhile, Dr. Nares Damrongchai, Director of Thailand Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences (TCELS), under the Ministry of Science and Technology, told reporters that TCELS has provided funds to Dr. Rapeepun since 2006 in conducting the research until it has been found that compound from rubber latex could help in body whitening and also in reducing hair falling. Dr. Nares revealed that TCELS recently signed an agreement with Prince of Songkla University to further undertake research on producing other cosmetic products for commercial purposes in overseas.
