Thai Senate calls for cooperation from caretaker government

BANGKOK, May 17 (TNA) - In an attempt to solve the persistent domestic political deadlock, Thai senators have called for cooperation from the caretaker government, political parties and all other concerned parties to help find a solution to the crux to avoid political violence. Acting Senate Speaker Surachai Liengboonlertchai made the call at a press conference at the Parliament building on Friday evening, after the end of a Senate informal meeting to discuss a solution to the domestic political strife. Surachai read a statement issued by senators attending the informal meeting, saying that a national reform, demanded by the anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) and its supporters, should be conducted and completed “as soon as possible” by a new prime minister and Cabinet which have full authority. Surachai revealed some 80 Thai senators participating in the informal meeting also agreed that the Upper House would consider opinions and suggestions, made by various agencies, during its upcoming special session in order to obtain a new prime minister under the Constitution urgently. Regarding to a planned Senate meeting with the caretaker government, Surachai acknowledged that the meeting has been postponed from May 17 to May 19 at a venue to be fixed later due to security reason. According to the acting Senate speaker, both the Upper House and the caretaker government plan to discuss measures for breaking Thailand's current political impasse. Asked whether it is necessary for the current caretaker Cabinet to resign en masse to pave the way for a national reform, the acting Senate speaker told journalists that it is up to the caretaker government to decide, but the Senate had not yet decided which articles of the Constitution would be used to select the new prime minister and the new Cabinet. The acting Senate speaker urged both the caretaker government and the pro-government red-clad group to join hands in solving the domestic political problems, pointing out if cooperation was seen, people would have hope and the domestic political cruxes could be solved more easily.
