Thai soldiers monitor updated situation

BANGKOK, March 19 (TNA) - Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha has ordered soldiers to monitor the updated domestic political situation closely, after Thailand's caretaker government has lifted the emergency decree imposed in all areas in Bangkok and adjacent Nonthaburi Province, as well as some areas in peripheral areas, effective from March 19, 2014 and the Internal Security Act (ISA) has been enforced in the same areas, instead. Colonel Banpote Poolpian, Spokesman of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), told journalists of the army chief's order on Wednesday, saying that the army chief made the instruction in his capacity as the ISOC's deputy director. Colonel Banpote acknowledged that soldiers have, therfore, continued supporting police in maintaining order but they may now adjust their work. According to the spokesman, 56 companies of soldiers have been deployed for the task, comprising 47 companies of army soldiers, seven naval companies and two companies of military police and air force soldiers. Meanwhile, Major General Wara Boonyasit, Commander of the Royal Thai Army's 1st Division, King’s Guards, revealed that the ISOC has also maintained 56 companies of soldiers and their 176 bunkers in Bangkok although the caretaker government-run Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) plans to reduce security checkpoints in the capital.(TNA)
