Thai Southerners Remain in Trouble Although Floods Start Receding

NARATHIWAT, December 28 (TNA) – Local residents in Thailand’s sourhern provinces near the Thai-Malaysian border remain in a difficult position although floods have started receding in some areas on Sunday, officials said. In Narathiwat , rain fell in the morning again while all the 13 districts are still inundated. Five villages in Tak Bai and Sungai Kolok districts remain in critical situation because water of Sungai Kolok River overflowed its banks by 1.89 metres after floodwater from Malaysia’s Kelantan, now facing the biggest problems among eight affected states, flowed toward the sea in Tak Bai, officials said. At least two houses in Narathiwat’s Sukhirin district collapsed due to soil erosion resulted from strong current of flood, officials said. No casualties were reported but property was damaged. People living in a Malaysian town in Kelantan, opposite Sungai Kolok district, are now living in the dark after electric authorities have decided to stop supplying electricity for three consecutive days. While communication is extremely difficult, food has also become scarce. Many Malaysians were forced to cross the border to buy oil from petrol stations in Sungai Kolok district which is much more expensive than in Malaysia. They wanted to fill oil in their boats so that they could evacuate from their flood-stricken areas. Simultaneously, people in Sungai Kolok have also started hoarding oil out of concern of possible oil shortage in the district, officials said. In nearby Yala province, concerned officials said excessive water discharged from Bang Lang Dam would not affect people living in the provincial seat because the amount of rainfall in the province has started declining while floodwater has also flowing into two major rivers.
