Thai students now pick majors that ensure future employment

BANGKOK, June 6 (TNA) - An academic has evaluated that university-level students in Thailand now tends to choose major fields that ensure their future employment like teaching and nursing, thanks to high market demand. Sompong Jitradab, a lecturer of Bangkok-based Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Education, made the assessment on Monday in response to the official announcement of the central admission system 2016's results, in which more students have chosen to have education and nursing as their major fields. Sompong said the students appear to know that they should be definitely employed after their graduation, as the graduates of the two faculties are highest demanded in the domestic labor market currently, especially nursing personnel. Besides, Sompong elaborated, Thailand's new Constitution draft 2016 states more support for the early childhood development, which means that concerned jobs such as teachers would be more promoted. Despite being a tough job, the lecturer pointed out, being teachers get high salaries, good welfare benefits and sound opportunities in their career path. The lecturer acknowledged his teaching in the Faculty of Education has found that about 90 per cent of students who had education as their major in recent years wanted to help the society, compared to only 20-30 per cent earlier. The lecturer noted that, amid higher competition, more students' selection in education could mean higher quality teachers in the Thai education system in the future. The lecturer proposed, meanwhile, that Social Science faculties adjust their policies amid the changing trend among Thai students. (TNA)
