Thai travelers warned to keep away from protesting groups in Nepal

BANGKOK, August 27 (TNA) - Thai travelers have been advised to take extra precaution in Nepal by keeping away from protesting groups in the Himalayan nation. The Thai Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, has issued an advice on its official website for Thais, who plan to travel to Nepal or who are already in the Himalayan nation for merit makings at the Lord Buddha's birthplace or for traveling, to take extra precaution due to ongoing political protests and strikes by local people over the country's new draft Constitution, which started on August 25. According to the Thai Embassy's online statement, there have been violent political protests and strikes across Nepal, especially on the western cities of Tikapur and Kailali, with several people having reportedly killed and wounded so far. Although there has been no violence in Lumbini, the birthplace of the Lord Buddha, the statement stressed, Thai visitors should take extra precaution during their staying in Nepal for their safety. Several other countries, including Australia, have also warned their citizens to exercise a high caution in Nepal. Ethnic groups have argued that Nepal's new draft Constitution, which would divide the country into seven federal states, would discriminate against them and give them insufficient autonomy. (TNA)
