Thai travellers urged to watch out MER-CoV

BANGKOK, June 10 (TNA) - The government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has urged Thai travellers to watch out the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MER-CoV), especially those visiting South Korea and the Middle East, where the deadly virus is spreading. The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the official warning on Wednesday, confirming, however, that there have been no Thai people found contracting the fatal virus so far. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sek Wannamethee, who is also Director-General of the ministry's Department of Information, told journalists that the Thai Embassy to South Korea has informed of having closely monitored updates of MERS-CoV outbreaks in the East Asian nation and having warned Thai citizens there to be more cautious and protect themselves from the deadly virus. The spokesman called on Thais planning to travel to South Korea to also strictly follow advice of the Thai and South Korean Public Health Ministries. According to updated reports as of June 10, there have been 108 MER-CoV cases in South Korea so far, nine of them have died. The spokesman said his ministry has also been reported by the Thai Embassy to Saudi Arabia that it has informed Thai nationals of MER-CoV outbreaks in the Middle East nation, together with continual guidances issued for them to protect themselves from the fatal virus. Meanwhile, the Saudi government has reportedly prepared measures against MER-CoV and other communicable diseases during the annual Hajj pilgrimage of global Muslims in Riyadh, this year set from August-October, including a system to connect information networks and a mobillisation of public health personnel to be on standby for necessary and timely operations during the period.
