Thailand buys more electricity from Laos

BANGKOK, May 2 (TNA) - The Energy Ministry has decided to buy more electricity from Laos to 9,000 megawatts from the current 7,000 megawatts. Governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Soonchai Kumnoonsate said a memorandum of understanding for the purchase of electricity would be amended and the buying would help strengthen relations with Laos which is considered as Thailand’s close neighbour. He said EGAT International, a subsidiary of EGAT, will have more opportunity to expand investment if the Thai government helps amend rules and regulations. The Energy Ministry considers that Thailand should not rely on buying too much power from one country because it could affect the kingdom’s energy security and has ordered the buying of power from each country at the maximum of 15 per cent of Thailand’s total power production.
